Why Is My Water Softener Draining or Running Water During the Day?
You hear water running to the drain, or see it during the day, and wonder if something’s broken. Good news: most of the time it’s an easy fix — and often nothing’s wrong at all.
First, know what’s normal
Your softener cleans itself on an automatic cycle called regeneration — it backwashes and rinses, and water runs to the drain while it does. This is supposed to happen overnight, usually between about 2:00 and 5:00 AM, when nobody’s using water.
Running during the day? Check the clock
If it’s regenerating in the daytime, the culprit is almost always a clock set to the wrong time of day — often after a power outage. The system still runs its cycle “at night,” but because the clock is off, “night” lands in the afternoon.
Look at the display:
- If it says “Backwash” or “Rinse,” the clock is almost certainly wrong. Reset the current time of day and it’ll go back to cleaning overnight.
- If the clock is correct and it’s still cycling at odd hours, that points to a valve or control issue worth a service call. In the meantime, you can put the system in bypass to stop it.
Is it wasting water or salt?
A single regeneration uses some water and salt by design — that’s normal. But if it’s cycling too often (wrong programming) or stuck cycling, it can waste both. If you notice constant draining or salt disappearing fast, have it looked at.
