What’s actually in your water
Every utility files an annual water quality report. We read them so you don’t have to — here’s the short version for each area we serve, straight from the latest report. Your own tap is confirmed at the free test.
Sources: each utility’s own annual water quality report (2025 data unless noted) and its UCMR5 PFAS results. “Hard” on the USGS scale starts at 121 mg/L (about 7 grains per gallon). Certifications named on this site are per-model NSF/ANSI listings you can verify at wqa.org.
What the research shows
Tankless gas heaters on hard water needed deliming after the equivalent of 1.6 years. On softened water they ran through the whole test.
Flow lost by low-flow showerheads on hard water in under 18 months. Every showerhead on softened water finished without a problem.
Less laundry detergent on softened water, washed in cold water instead of hot, with the same or better stain removal.
Independent testing for the Water Quality Research Foundation: Battelle Memorial Institute on 26-grain water (2009) and Scientific Services S/D on laundry (2011). Manatee County’s water is 6 to 16 grains in its 2025 report, so scale builds more slowly, but the same way.

Who you’re dealing with
Brad Germain started Hydrology while in fire school, served in Manatee County, and left the department when the business took off. Before that he spent years cleaning commercial pools in Bradenton and Sarasota, so water chemistry isn’t new to him.
Cutting scaled-up galvanized pipe out of homes is what sent him into water treatment. He still tests, diagnoses and installs himself.
How we work
You’ve probably dealt with a salesperson who’d say anything to get the deal. Here, the person who tests your water is the person who installs your system and services it afterward. So we tell you what it will do, what it won’t, and what it costs to keep up, before you decide.
Copper, PEX-A, PEX-B, CPVC, PVC, even old galvanized: each one is joined differently, and we work with all of them. On copper we cut the line and press the new fittings on with a press tool. PEX stays PEX the whole way. CPVC stays CPVC or transitions to PVC, depending on the job.
The easiest spot to install isn’t always the one you want to look at. We have the tools and the plumbing skill to consider other places: the side of the house, behind the landscaping, a tight garage corner. We’ll tell you what each one involves, and if a spot doesn’t make sense, we’ll tell you that too.

Yes. Manatee County reports 106–279 mg/L (roughly 6 to 16 grains per gallon) depending on the blend that day; Pinellas prints 189–244 mg/L and even lists the softener setting for it. Anything over 121 mg/L is “hard” on the USGS scale. It varies by address, which is why we measure at your sink instead of quoting a county average.
A softener takes out the hardness minerals that cause spots, scale and dry skin. A filter takes out taste, odor and disinfectant. Most homes on city water here want both in one tank, because the water is hard and chloraminated; that’s what the Hydronex and Defender iGen C are. On a well, the filter side is usually iron and sulfur instead.
Yes — RO reduces or removes PFAS, and the Micromax 8500 is certified for PFOA/PFOS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53. Locally: Manatee and Pinellas found no PFAS above reporting limits in their UCMR5 testing; Sarasota County reported PFOA at 3.8 ppt at the Carlton plant (under the 4.0 ppt limit); Charlotte County’s samples ran up to 5.2 ppt PFOA and 4.3 ppt PFOS. It depends on your water and your home, which is why we start with the free test — you’ll have a written number before we leave. There’s a system at every budget: our own Hydrology Essentials softener is value-built equipment we install, warranty and service ourselves, and the Puronics line sits above it for homes that need more. We’ll show you the range and tell you which one your water actually needs — the biggest system isn’t automatically the right one. 0% and low-monthly financing through Synchrony and Wisetack; checking your options doesn’t affect your credit.
Even more so. Nobody tests a private well but the owner, so the free test is the only report you’ll get. Iron, sulfur, tannins and hardness are the usual four east of I-75, and we build the system to your numbers on US-made Clack valves rather than selling a package.
Then we tell you that and leave you our number. Moderate hardness, no complaints, water heater under warranty — plenty of homes hear exactly that. We’d rather be the company you call later than the one that sold you something you didn’t need.
