Drinking Water Filtration for St. Petersburg Kitchens

Tampa Bay Water supplies most of St. Petersburg with a blend of Floridan Aquifer groundwater, treated surface water, and desalinated seawater β€” with the City of St. Petersburg also running its own system β€” and that mix is disinfected with chloramine before it reaches your tap. Chloramine holds on longer than plain chlorine, so even after a whole-home filter, a lot of St. Pete residents notice a flat, chemical edge to their drinking and cooking water straight from the kitchen faucet.

Why the Kitchen Tap Needs Its Own Filtration

A whole-home system is built to treat volume β€” showers, laundry, every fixture in the house β€” but the water you actually drink and cook with deserves a finer level of filtration. Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane that reduces total dissolved solids along with chlorine and chloramine taste, so what comes out of the kitchen faucet tastes noticeably cleaner and more consistent, even as the blend from Tampa Bay Water shifts between aquifer, surface, and desalinated sources.

  • Puronics Micromax 7000 β€” an under-sink RO system that reduces TDS and chlorine/chloramine taste for clearer, better-tasting water right at the kitchen tap.
  • Hydronex iGen β€” our whole-home combo unit, a natural pairing for households that want chloramine and hardness handled at every tap plus polished water at the sink.

Micromax 7000 carries the same Puronics WQA Gold Seal and Franklin Electric backing as the rest of our lineup, installed by our own techs and serviced locally if it’s ever needed. As a family-owned, firefighter-founded company expanding into St. Petersburg, we’ve already put 16+ systems into homes in the area, and stand behind that work with 4.7 stars and 205 Google reviews.

What is actually in St Petersburg’s drinking water

Your supply comes from City of St Petersburg, disinfected with chloramine at 3.73 ppm. Radium at 2.1 pCi/L, well under the limit. The city stopped adding fluoride on 16 June 2025.

The thing worth understanding before you buy: a whole-home softener and an under-sink reverse osmosis unit are certified for almost entirely different lists. The softener handles hardness across the whole house. The RO handles the dissolved-solids side at one tap — lead, nitrate, arsenic, chromium-6, cysts, TDS. Neither covers the other’s list, which is why we fit both rather than pretend one does everything.

Certification is worth checking rather than trusting: reverse osmosis is NSF/ANSI 58, PFAS reduction is NSF/ANSI 53, and NSF/ANSI 372 means the parts are lead-free — it is not a lead removal claim, and quotes misuse it constantly.

Locally: the 1920s bungalows and mid-century neighbourhoods sometimes still have galvanised runs, and no softener fixes a pipe that is already restricted.

Figures are from City of St Petersburg’s own published water quality report. Where a utility does not publish something, we say so rather than estimate it. The water test is free and carries no obligation.

Straight answers

St. Petersburg Drinking Water β€” common questions

What people in your area ask before they call.

What does a reverse osmosis drinking system remove?

RO reduces a wide range of dissolved contaminants β€” PFAS, lead, nitrate, fluoride, sodium, and the dissolved solids behind taste and odor. In St. Petersburg, hard, chlorinated Tampa Bay Water makes better-tasting drinking water a common upgrade. It installs under the kitchen sink.

Is RO better than a fridge or pitcher filter in St. Petersburg?

A pitcher or fridge filter mainly improves taste; RO removes a far broader list down to a much smaller particle size and gives filtered water on demand from its own faucet. For St. Petersburg drinking water, RO is the step up.

Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?

Yes β€” and we can point at a certification instead of just saying so. Our Micromax 8500 is certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS reduction, which is a third-party tested claim rather than a marketing line. The Micromax 7000 is certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 58 and 372 but not for PFAS, so if PFAS is the reason you are calling, the 8500 is the one to ask about. One honest caveat: the EPA notes that current certifications do not yet show a filter reduces PFAS all the way down to the new federal limits. A free in-home test tells us what your St. Petersburg water is actually dealing with.
