Pool Smell or Chemical Taste? Whole-Home Chlorine & Chloramine Filtration in Bradenton

If your city tap smells like a pool or tastes chemical, that is the disinfectant your utility adds — and Manatee County treats with chloramine, which ordinary filters struggle to remove. A whole-home catalytic carbon system takes it out of every tap, not just the kitchen. We size it to your home and back it in writing.

Why your city water smells like a pool

The smell and chemical taste are the disinfectant your utility uses on the water’s way to you. In Manatee County a lot of that supply is surface water from Lake Manatee, treated with chloramine — a longer-lasting disinfectant than plain chlorine. The EPA allows it at up to 4 ppm, but it lingers: it can dry out skin and hair, leave a chemical taste in your coffee and ice, bother people with sensitivities, and it is hard on aquariums. Taking it out at every tap simply makes your whole house more comfortable.

Chlorine vs. chloramine — and why the type of carbon matters

This is the part most people are never told. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, which makes it far more stable and stubborn than plain chlorine — and standard activated carbon struggles to remove it. The media that actually reduces chloramine is catalytic carbon, which is engineered for exactly this job. Plenty of whole-house “carbon” systems are built with ordinary carbon and quietly underperform on chloramine. So the single smartest question you can ask any company is simple: is the carbon catalytic? Ours is. Want the deeper science? See our catalytic vs. activated carbon breakdown.

Every tap, not just the kitchen

A pitcher or a fridge filter only cleans up one faucet. A whole-home system treats the water where it enters your house, so the chlorine is gone from every shower, every sink, and your laundry — better for your skin and hair, and no chemical smell anywhere. If you also have hard water, we can combine softening and carbon filtration in one system so you solve both at once.

Ideal for

  • ✓ City water that smells like a pool or tastes chemical
  • ✓ Dry skin and hair, or sensitivity to chlorine / chloramine
  • ✓ Removing the disinfectant from every shower, sink, and your laundry
  • ✓ Manatee / Bradenton homes on chloramine-treated city water
  • ✓ Aquarium and reef keepers who need chloramine out

Why we build every system on Clack

The control valve is the brain of your system — and it is the part that actually wears out over the years, not the tank. We use the Clack WS1 on every build because you are never trapped: it is a name-brand, certified, professional-grade valve that is genuinely easy to service, so a handy homeowner can watch a video and handle a repair with no proprietary parts, or simply rest easy knowing it can be fixed fast. A lot of companies install a more economical valve to hit a price — we do not. (Curious about the difference? See our Fleck vs. Clack breakdown.)

Backed in writing

Coverage depends on the system. Our Puronics systems carry a lifetime warranty on manufacturer defects and a 2,000,000-gallon warranty on the carbon. Custom-built systems carry the manufacturer warranties on the Clack valve and media plus our own labor warranty — a shorter term than the Puronics lifetime, but on certified, name-brand parts. Either way you get your exact coverage in writing at your quote — never a vague promise.

Three questions to ask about any carbon system

Three questions tell you what you are buying. One: is the carbon catalytic? On chloramine water that is the difference between working and not, and it is easy to gloss over. Two: is the system actually certified, or just “tested to” a standard? Real certification is listed in the WQA or NSF database — look it up by model. Three: who backs the warranty — the manufacturer, a third-party program, or just that dealer — and will they put it in writing?

Maintenance

A carbon system quietly backwashes itself — no salt, nothing to refill day to day. The catalytic media lasts years, and the 2,000,000-gallon carbon warranty covers it. We service it on a simple schedule, and because it is built on Clack, you can handle basic service yourself with a how-to video (ours are coming) rather than being locked into one company.

What hard water does to a home: the Battelle study →

Does Bradenton use chlorine or chloramine?

Much of Manatee County city water is surface water treated with chloramine, a longer-lasting disinfectant than plain chlorine. Your free test and your utility report confirm what is in your specific supply.

Will a regular carbon filter remove chloramine?

Standard activated carbon struggles with chloramine because it is more stable than chlorine. Catalytic carbon is engineered to reduce it, which is what we install. If a company cannot tell you their carbon is catalytic, that is a red flag on chloramine water.

I already have a softener. Do I still need carbon?

They do different jobs. A softener removes hardness minerals; it does not remove chlorine or chloramine. Carbon handles the disinfectant. Many city homes want both, which is why we offer a combined softener-and-carbon system.

Is chloramine harmful?

The EPA allows it at up to 4 ppm in drinking water. Filtering it is about comfort and quality — taste, smell, dry skin and hair, sensitivities, and aquariums — not an emergency. We will never use scare tactics; we will just take it out if you want it gone.

How long does the carbon last?

Years, depending on your water and usage — it is high-capacity media, and it is covered by a 2,000,000-gallon warranty. We keep an eye on it as part of service.

What valve do you use, and can I service it myself?

The name-brand, certified Clack WS1, chosen because it is easy to service. If you are handy you can watch a video and handle a repair with no proprietary parts; if not, our own techs take care of it.

Is it certified, and what is the warranty?

WQA Gold Seal certified, NSF-tested equipment, with a lifetime warranty on manufacturer defects plus a 2,000,000-gallon carbon warranty — in writing, and verifiable in the WQA or NSF directory.
