Bacteria in a private well,
handled without chemicals.
A UV lamp kills bacteria and viruses as the water passes it — no chlorine, no taste, no residual. The catch is that it only works on clear water, so we test first and pre-treat when the well needs it.

The problem
Why private wells get bacteria
Unlike city water, a private well is not disinfected by anyone but you. Bacteria such as coliform or E. coli can get in through surface intrusion, a cracked well cap, flooding, or simply an older well — and you usually cannot see, taste, or smell it. That is exactly why the state and the EPA recommend testing a private well regularly. It is common, it is nothing to panic about, and it is very fixable.
How it works
How UV disinfection works
Water passes through a chamber around a Viqua UV lamp, and the ultraviolet light neutralizes bacteria and viruses so they cannot reproduce or make you sick. There are no chemicals, nothing added to the water, and no change to the taste — just clean water at every tap. It runs quietly in the background and only needs a lamp change about once a year.
What it will not do
The part: UV only works on clean water
This is where an expert matters. UV kills bacteria but it removes nothing, and it only works if the water is already clear — low iron, low hardness, no sediment, tannins, or sulfur — because cloudiness and particles let bacteria “hide” from the light. If your well is otherwise clean, UV is the perfect, low-cost safeguard. If it also has iron, sulfur, or that slimy biofilm, UV is the wrong tool on its own — we either clean the water up ahead of the UV, or, when iron and sulfur bacteria are the problem, use chlorine injection instead. We will tell you which your water needs.
Before you buy
How to shop for a UV system without getting fooled
UV is powerful — a Viqua system neutralizes bacteria, viruses, and other microbes as they pass the lamp. But here’s the part most sellers skip: UV only works on water that is already clear. Iron, sediment, or tannins shadow the microbes from the light and the system underperforms. Anyone who quotes you UV without testing for those first is setting you up to fail.
What to look for: a real water test before the quote, a plan to pre-treat anything cloudy, and clear expectations about upkeep — the lamp and sleeve are replaced about once a year. We install name-brand Viqua, our own techs do the work, and the equipment is manufacturer-backed and serviced right here — no shipping it off, no call center.

What hard water does to a home: the Battelle study →
Does UV remove iron, chemicals, or hardness?
No — UV only disinfects. It kills bacteria and viruses but removes nothing. That is why the water has to be clear first; if you also have iron, sulfur, or hardness, those are handled by other stages ahead of the UV.
UV or chlorine injection — which do I need?
If your well is bacteriologically unsafe but otherwise clean, UV is the simple answer. If the bacteria come with iron, sulfur, or a slimy biofilm, chlorine injection is the right tool, because it treats those together and disinfects at the source. Your test decides.
Does UV change the taste of my water?
No. Nothing is added and nothing is left behind — the water tastes exactly the same, just clean.
How much maintenance is it?
About one lamp change a year, plus an occasional sleeve cleaning. We handle it on an annual schedule.
What is the warranty?
The Viqua manufacturer warranty on the UV unit plus our own labor warranty, in writing. Our factory Puronics systems carry a lifetime manufacturer-defect warranty; we will tell you which applies.
