Hard water on the Suncoast?
A softener that actually softens.
Spots on the dishes, scale on the fixtures, dry skin, soap that will not lather. Nearly every home on the Suncoast has hard water — Manatee reports 106 to 279 mg/L depending on the day. We test yours free, then size a real softener to your number.

Our install · real job, not stock
The problem
What hard water is quietly doing to your home
Southwest Florida sits on limestone, so our water picks up a lot of calcium and magnesium on the way to your tap — that is “hard” water. You see it as spots on glasses, chalky scale on faucets and shower doors, soap that will not lather, dry itchy skin and stiff laundry, and scale building up inside your water heater and coffee maker. None of it is dangerous, but it wears out appliances early and makes everything harder to keep clean. It is the single most common water complaint on the Suncoast, and a softener solves it completely.
How it works
What a softener actually does — and the “salt-free” question
A real water softener uses ion exchange to actually remove the calcium and magnesium from your water — that is what gives you spot-free dishes, lathering soap, and softer skin. It is worth knowing the difference here, because a lot of companies sell a “salt-free” system as if it were a softener. Salt-free / conditioning systems do not remove hardness at all — they only change its form so it sticks less. That helps with scale, but you will still see spotting and get less lather, because the minerals are still in the water. If you genuinely cannot use salt, conditioning is a fair option and we will install it — but we will always tell you which one actually does what you want.
When it is enough
When a softener is all you need — and when it is not
On a well, if your test shows hard water and nothing else, a properly sized softener really is all you need — full stop, and we will not stack on filters you do not. Wells here do not carry chloramine, so a softener on its own does its job for years.
City water is a different story, and this is something most companies will not tell you. Manatee County chloramine runs high — high enough that, over time, it breaks down ordinary softener resin, so a softener installed by itself simply will not last the way it should. That is why on city water we put catalytic carbon ahead of the softener: it removes the chloramine you can smell and taste, and it protects your softener so it lasts for years. On city water, softener-plus-carbon is not an upsell — it is what makes the softener worth buying.

The valve
Why we build every system on Clack
The control valve is the brain of your softener — and it is the part that actually wears out over the years, not the tank. We use the Clack WS1 on every build for one big reason: you are never trapped. It is a name-brand, certified, professional-grade valve that is genuinely easy to service — so if it ever needs attention down the road, a handy homeowner can watch a video and handle it, or simply have the peace of mind of knowing it can be fixed fast, with no proprietary parts. A lot of companies install a more economical valve to hit a price. We do not — one serviceable, certified valve on every system, sized to your water.
Coverage depends on the system. Our Puronics systems carry a lifetime warranty on manufacturer defects and a 2,000,000-gallon warranty on the carbon. Custom-built systems carry the manufacturer warranties on the Clack valve and media plus our own labor warranty — a shorter term than the Puronics lifetime, but on certified, name-brand parts. Either way you get your exact coverage in writing at your quote — never a vague promise.
A real job
What a metered valve is actually for
A client’s water bill roughly doubled — on the order of 29,000 gallons. He called a leak detection company. They found nothing, and pointed at the water softener.
We pulled the usage history off the valve and read it back as far as it goes — 63 days:
- Days 1–9: zero gallons. The system was in bypass. It could not have passed a drop.
- Days 10–55: 150 to 200 gallons a day. Normal for the house.
- Then five days in a row at about 5,000 gallons, and a sixth at about 2,500.
- Then straight back to normal, and it never came back.
That six-day block is roughly 27,500 gallons — essentially the entire overage on its own. It cleared the softener with a record instead of an opinion, and it told the homeowner exactly which six days to think about.
To be straight about it: we did not find the cause. The meter says when and how much, not what. And the leak detection company was not wrong to find nothing — whatever it was had already stopped. Nothing was leaking by the time anyone looked, which is exactly why the only record of it was sitting inside the softener.

How to shop for a softener without getting fooled
Three questions save people a lot of money and regret. One: is it actually certified, or just “tested to” a standard? Real certification is listed in the WQA or NSF database — you can look it up by model; if you cannot find it, it is not certified. Two: what control valve does it use, and can it be serviced without proprietary parts? Three: who actually backs the warranty — the manufacturer, a third-party program, or just that dealer — and will they put it in writing? A “lifetime” that leans on a dealer you may never see again is not the same as a manufacturer defect warranty on certified equipment.
Ownership
Maintenance
A softener just needs salt in the brine tank every few weeks — the demand-metered valve handles the rest and only regenerates when your usage calls for it, which saves salt and water. We service it on a simple schedule, and because it is built on Clack, you can also handle basic service yourself with a how-to video (ours are coming) instead of being locked into one company.
