We tried the repair first. Then we replaced it.
The old softener in this Lakewood Ranch garage had stopped drawing brine from the salt tank and was overflowing onto the garage floor. A repair costs a lot less than a new system, so that is where we started: we replaced every part in the valve head. The spacers were clearly worn.
It still would not draw brine. Past that point, more parts would have been more of his money going into a tired valve, so we offered a new system instead. He chose the Hydrology Essentials — one tank with a cubic foot of softening resin and a quarter cubic foot each of catalytic and activated carbon ahead of it, on a metered Clack valve that regenerates on the water the house actually uses.

In September 2026 we put a Puronics Defender 30C on a Country Club home built in 2000. It softens Manatee County’s 6–16 grain water and takes out the chloramine in the same tank. The system is outdoors, so the valve has a cover on it.

What’s really in your Lakewood Ranch water
Lakewood Ranch straddles the Manatee–Sarasota county line, but almost every village sits on the Manatee side and gets Manatee County water. Waterside, on the Sarasota side, is the main exception.
- Source: a blend of Lake Manatee surface water and Floridan aquifer groundwater
- Hardness: 106–279 mg/L, up to about 16 grains per gallon — hard enough to scale fixtures and dull soap
- Disinfection: chloramine (chlorine + ammonia)
- PFAS: Manatee County tested all 29 PFAS in its 2024 UCMR5 round — every one came back below the lab’s reporting level
- Supplier: not confirmed for Waterside yet. Sarasota County’s own supply is a blend, and part of it is bought from Manatee County
- Hardness: not published for Waterside, so we measure it at your tap
- Disinfection: chloramine
- PFAS: ask us, and we’ll go through the current report for your address at the free test
Both counties disinfect with chloramine, and that decides the right system: chloramine takes more contact time to remove than plain chlorine, so catalytic carbon is the correct filter — not standard carbon. A properly sized softener handles the hardness on either side of the line, and on Manatee County water that runs up to about 16 grains. A softener does not remove PFAS — reverse osmosis is what reduces it — so if PFAS is your concern, we pair the whole-home system with an RO drinking-water unit.
