What’s really in your Sarasota water
It depends on your address — and the difference changes what your system should do.
Which one you’re on depends on your address, and it changes what your system should do. County water is disinfected with chloramine, which needs catalytic carbon to remove — standard carbon barely touches it. City of Sarasota water is on free chlorine, where standard carbon is fine. On PFAS, Sarasota County is one of the few local utilities that publishes its own results. Their 2025 testing showed PFOA at the Carlton plant at 3.8 parts per trillion, just under the EPA’s 4.0 limit (PFOS at 2.4) — compliant, but close to the line. What is actually in City of Sarasota water.
City of Sarasota Utilities, public water system FL6580326, serving about 55,000 people. This is deep-well groundwater from the Upper Floridan aquifer, and the city treats it with reverse osmosis and ion-exchange softening before it ever reaches you — which makes this a genuinely different supply from the surface water Manatee County sends to Bradenton.
About hardness — and why we are not printing a number. The raw aquifer water under Sarasota is very hard; one widely quoted figure puts the source at around 350 mg/L, which would be about 20 grains. But the city softens and reverse-osmoses the water at the plant, so that figure describes what goes in, not what comes out of your tap. What actually arrives at your house depends on the blend and can vary. Anyone quoting you a Sarasota hardness number off the internet is quoting the wrong end of the process. We test at your sink instead.
Why Sarasota is not Bradenton

Free chlorine here, chloramine there — and that changes the filter
Manatee County chloraminates: chlorine bonded to ammonia, which is stable and hard to filter, and which standard carbon largely passes straight through. That is why a Bradenton home needs catalytic carbon. The City of Sarasota, in its own words, adds free chlorine. Free chlorine is the easier job — ordinary activated carbon handles it well. If someone tries to sell you catalytic carbon in Sarasota on a chloramine argument, the argument does not apply to your water.
Higher trihalomethanes — and that is the tradeoff, not a scandal
Sarasota’s TTHM average is 57 ppb against a limit of 80; Bradenton’s is 33.5. Free chlorine forms more of these byproducts than chloramine does, which is precisely why many utilities switched to chloramine in the first place. Both systems are under the federal limit. If the taste or smell bothers you, carbon is the answer — and here, the ordinary kind is enough.
Sodium at 88 ppm, because the plant already softens
The city treats with ion-exchange softening, and ion exchange trades hardness minerals for sodium. That is how the process works, at the plant exactly as it would in your garage. For most people this is a non-issue. If someone in the house is on a sodium-restricted diet, it is worth knowing about, and a drinking-water reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap is the straightforward answer — RO is certified for total dissolved solids, which is the category sodium falls into.
Chromium-6 is low here — so we are not going to use it on you
In Bradenton, hexavalent chromium comes in above the EWG health guideline, and we say so on that page because it is a real reason to consider reverse osmosis. In the City of Sarasota it measures 0.0125 ppb, which is below that same guideline. Same company, same equipment, different water — so a different recommendation. You will not find us running the chromium argument on a supply where the number does not support it.
Chlorate is the one that is higher here
At 620 ppb, Sarasota’s chlorate is more than double Bradenton’s and above the EWG guideline of 210 ppb. There is no federal limit for it. We will be straight with you the same way we are on the Bradenton page: we do not have a certified reduction claim to hand you for chlorate, and we are not going to invent one to make a sale.
The short version: in the City of Sarasota the softening argument is weaker because the plant already does some of it, the catalytic-carbon argument does not apply, and the strongest case for equipment is at the drinking tap. That is a smaller recommendation than we would make in Bradenton, and it is the one.
