Do I Need a Water Softener AND a Filter — or Just One?
Aug 21, 2026A softener and a filter do two different jobs — and a lot of Florida homes actually need both. They get lumped together as “water treatment,” but they solve different problems. Here’s the plain-English difference so you can tell what your home actually needs.
What a water softener does
A softener removes hardness — the dissolved calcium and magnesium that leave spots, scale and film. That’s what protects your water heater and plumbing, stops the crusty buildup on fixtures, and makes soap actually lather. A softener does not improve taste or remove chlorine/chloramine; that’s not its job.
What a filter does
A whole-home carbon filter handles taste, odor and disinfectant — chlorine, or on our chloraminated water, chloramine (which needs catalytic carbon). It’s what makes the water smell and taste clean at every tap. A filter does not soften water — you can filter out the pool smell and still have scale and spots.
Why many homes want both
If you’re on Manatee or Sarasota County city water, you likely have hardness and chloramine — so a combined softener-plus-carbon system fixes both at once. That’s the most common setup we install here, often as a single whole-home unit. Then, for drinking water, a small reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap polishes it to bottle quality.

Does a water softener also filter the water? No. A softener removes hardness; it doesn’t remove chlorine, chloramine or improve taste. That’s what a carbon filter does.
Can I get one unit that does both? Yes — many whole-home systems combine softening and catalytic-carbon filtration in one tank.
Do I still need reverse osmosis if I have both? For the best-tasting drinking water, yes — RO at the kitchen tap goes a step further than whole-home treatment.
