Water Softener Not Working? Common Problems and Simple Fixes

If your water suddenly feels hard again — spots on the glasses, filmy skin, no slippery feel in the shower — your softener is usually telling you one of a few simple things. Most of the time it’s salt, a setting, or a part that’s easy to sort out. Here are the most common reasons a water softener stops working, and how to tell which one you’re dealing with.

1. It ran out of salt (or formed a salt bridge)

The number-one cause is the simplest: the brine tank is out of salt, or a hard crust of salt has “bridged” over an empty pocket so it looks full but isn’t dissolving. Open the lid and check. If the salt is low, top it up. If it looks full but you haven’t added any in a while, push a broom handle gently into the salt to break any crust, then refill.

2. The system isn’t regenerating

Softeners clean themselves on a schedule called regeneration. If the timer, valve or control head loses its settings after a power blip, the unit stops regenerating and the resin can’t keep softening. Check that the display has the right time of day and that a regeneration is actually scheduled. A unit that never cycles will slowly let hard water back through.

3. A salt bridge or “mushing” in the brine tank

Over time, cheap or damp salt can turn to a mush at the bottom of the tank that won’t draw properly. If you’ve cleared a bridge and still have no soft water, the tank may need a clean-out and fresh, good-quality salt.

4. The resin is fouled or worn out

Resin beads are what actually pull hardness out of your water. On chloraminated Manatee-County water, or well water heavy in iron, resin can foul or wear down over years. If salt and settings check out but the water is still hard, the resin bed may need cleaning or replacement — that’s a job worth having someone look at.

5. Iron, pressure or bypass issues

If you’re on a well and suddenly see staining or smell sulfur, the softener may be overwhelmed by iron or the pre-treatment may need service. Also check that the bypass valve wasn’t accidentally left in the “bypass” position after plumbing work — that sends water straight around the softener.
