Water Softener vs. Reverse Osmosis: Do You Need Both?
Aug 22, 2026They do two completely different jobs. A water softener treats the water for your whole house; reverse osmosis (RO) polishes the water you drink and cook with at one tap. Many Florida homes benefit from both — but not every home needs both. Here’s how to tell.
What a water softener does
A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium (“hardness”) that Florida’s limestone aquifers put into your water. That hardness spots your glasses, films your skin, scales your water heater and shortens the life of every water-using appliance. A softener treats the water for the entire home — every shower, faucet and appliance. What it does not do well is remove the chlorine or chloramine taste, or the dissolved contaminants in your drinking water.
What reverse osmosis does
Reverse osmosis is a drinking-water system, usually installed under the kitchen sink. It pushes water through a very fine membrane that removes a wide range of dissolved solids a softener or carbon filter leaves behind — giving you clean, bottle-quality water for drinking, coffee, ice and cooking. RO treats a single tap, not the whole house.
So do you need both?
Softener only: you mainly care about hard-water damage — scale, spotting, dry skin, appliance wear — and you’re fine with your drinking water’s taste. RO only: your water isn’t very hard, but you want better-tasting drinking water at the kitchen tap. Both: you want soft water throughout the house and the cleanest possible drinking water. This is the most common setup on the Suncoast, because our water tends to be both hard and heavily disinfected.
Why they work well together
Hard water is tough on an RO membrane. Running a softener ahead of the RO means the membrane isn’t fighting scale, so it lasts longer and performs better. Common questions
Does a softener make water better to drink?
A softener changes hardness, not the taste or dissolved contaminants — that’s RO’s job. If drinking-water quality is your goal, RO is the piece that addresses it.
Will RO alone fix my spotty glasses and scale?
No — those are hard-water problems throughout the house, and RO only treats one tap. You’d want a softener for that.
Is softened water salty?
No. A properly sized softener removes hardness and adds only a very small amount of sodium — far less than most people expect. If sodium is a concern, we’ll talk through options after your test.
Which should I get first if I can only do one now?
