Water Softeners & Whole-Home Filtration
in Silverstone at Artisan Lakes, Palmetto.
Silverstone at Artisan Lakes is one of the newest master-planned communities on the Manatee County side of Palmetto, and it’s also become our single densest neighborhood—we’ve installed 21+ water treatment systems here, more than anywhere else we serve. That’s not a coincidence. Silverstone homes are all on the same municipal water supply, they were all built within the last few years, and they’re all running into the same water problems on roughly the same timeline. If you’ve noticed spotting on your shower glass, a chlorine-pool smell coming out of the tap, or a tankless water heater that’s already throwing error codes, you’re not imagining it and you’re not alone in the neighborhood.

What’s Actually Coming Out of the Tap in Silverstone
Water reaching Silverstone comes from Manatee County’s Lake Manatee Water Treatment Plant, which blends reservoir water from the Manatee River with Floridan aquifer groundwater before Manatee County Utilities pipes it out to Artisan Lakes and the rest of the county’s newer development corridor. The plant lime-softens the groundwater share of the supply, which knocks hardness down somewhat at the treatment stage—but lime softening isn’t the same as the ion-exchange softening a home system does, and a good amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium survives the trip through miles of distribution pipe to your address. By the time it reaches a Silverstone kitchen faucet, Manatee County water still tests between 106 and 279 mg/L as calcium carbonate — about 6 to 16 grains per gallon, solidly in “hard” territory on any water hardness scale.
For disinfection, the county uses chloramine—chlorine bonded with ammonia—instead of plain chlorine. Utilities like chloramine because it’s stable enough to hold its disinfecting power across long pipe runs and Florida heat without breaking down and forming as many byproducts along the way. The tradeoff for homeowners is that “stable enough to survive miles of pipe” also means “stable enough to survive a basic pitcher or fridge filter.” Chloramine is what gives Manatee County water that flat, chlorine-forward taste and smell that a lot of Silverstone residents notice right out of the tap, especially compared to whatever municipal water they were used to before moving here.
Why New Construction in Silverstone Scales Up Faster, Not Slower
There’s a common assumption that new-build homes are somehow protected from hard-water problems because everything’s brand new. In practice, it’s often the opposite. Silverstone homes are built with the fixtures that show hardness fastest—frameless glass shower enclosures with almost no tolerance for mineral spotting, tankless water heaters that run hotter and concentrate scale on internal heat exchangers instead of spreading it across a big tank, and higher-efficiency appliances with tighter tolerances that don’t handle scale buildup as gracefully as older, simpler models did. A tankless unit scaling up inside its first 18–24 months in a hard-water area like this isn’t unusual—we see it regularly in this community. Irrigation heads, pool equipment, and outdoor fixtures pick up mineral deposits just as fast in Florida’s heat and sun.
Matching Silverstone Water to the Right Equipment
Because Silverstone’s water problem has two distinct parts—hardness and chloramine—it takes two distinct pieces of equipment working together, not one filter trying to do everything.
Softening the hardness. A Puronics Defender iGen softener uses ion exchange to pull calcium and magnesium out of the water before it reaches a single fixture in the house. That’s what stops new scale from forming on shower glass, keeps a tankless heater’s heat exchanger clear, and takes the workload off a dishwasher and washing machine that would otherwise be fighting mineral buildup every cycle.
Breaking down the chloramine. Standard carbon filtration—the kind in most off-the-shelf systems—isn’t built to handle chloramine’s ammonia bond; it passes through basic carbon largely untouched. Our whole-home systems use catalytic carbon, rated for roughly 2,000,000 gallons, which is manufactured specifically to break that bond and pull the byproducts out. That’s the piece that gets rid of the chlorine-pool smell at every tap and shower in the house, not just the kitchen sink. For a lot of Silverstone homes we combine softening and whole-home filtration in one footprint with the Puronics Hydronex iGen, which handles both jobs from a single system in the garage.
Drinking and cooking water. For water that’s headed into a glass, a coffee maker, or a pot on the stove, we install the Puronics Micromax 7000 reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink. It’s a separate, finer stage of filtration dedicated to drinking water specifically, and it’s the system most Silverstone homeowners tell us made the most noticeable difference in taste.
All three run on Puronics equipment, which carries the WQA Gold Seal and is manufactured by Franklin Electric, a publicly traded company—engineering and quality control at that scale, backed by a manufacturer’s warranty that we service locally. But it’s our own techs, not subcontractors, who install and stand behind every system that goes into a Silverstone home.
Signs a Silverstone Home Has a Water Problem
- White or chalky spots on shower glass, faucets, and dishes that come back within days of cleaning
- A tankless water heater losing hot water pressure or throwing scale-related error codes earlier than expected
- A chlorine or “pool” smell coming from tap water or the shower, especially first thing in the morning
- Soap and shampoo that don’t lather well, or skin and hair that feel filmy after showering
- Laundry that looks dingy or feels stiff even with a full detergent dose
- Faster-than-expected buildup on irrigation heads, pool equipment, or outdoor fixtures
What Happens During Your Free In-Home Water Test
Since Silverstone is all on the same county supply, we already know the baseline numbers going in—but every home is different once water hits your plumbing, your fixtures, and your water heater. A tech comes to your house, tests your actual tap water for hardness, chlorine/chloramine levels, and pH on the spot, and walks the house with you to look at where scale and buildup are already showing up. You get straight numbers and a plain-English explanation of what they mean for your specific home—no sales script, no obligation to buy anything. If a softener or whole-home system makes sense, we’ll say so; if it doesn’t, we’ll say that too.
Why Silverstone Homeowners Choose Hydrology
Hydrology Water Solutions is a family-owned, firefighter-founded company built on the same standard that job demands—show up, do the work right, and stand behind it. We’re not a national franchise dispatching a subcontractor to your door; the technician who tests your water is the same person who installs and services your system, and that continuity shows in the workmanship. Every system carries the manufacturer’s warranty from Franklin Electric, which we handle locally rather than routing you through a call center. And because we know a whole-home system is a real investment, we offer 0% financing through Synchrony and Wisetack so Silverstone homeowners can get the right system in without paying for it all at once. With 21+ installs already in this community, we’ve likely already worked on a home a few doors down from yours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Silverstone’s water actually different from the rest of Palmetto?
Not really—Silverstone draws from the same Manatee County Utilities system, a blend of Lake Manatee reservoir water and Floridan aquifer groundwater, as most of the surrounding growth corridor. What’s different is that Silverstone is almost entirely new construction on the same timeline, so the whole neighborhood tends to hit scale and chloramine problems around the same age of home.
My house is brand new—why would I already need a water softener?
New doesn’t mean protected. Newer fixtures like frameless glass showers and tankless water heaters actually show hardness damage faster than older, more forgiving fixtures did, and the county’s water hasn’t changed just because your house is new.
Do I need both a softener and a whole-home filter, or just one?
They solve different problems. A softener handles hardness (scale, spotting, appliance strain); catalytic carbon whole-home filtration handles chloramine (taste and smell). Most Silverstone homes benefit from both, which is why we often combine them into one Hydronex iGen system—but a free test will tell you what your specific home actually needs.
How long does installation take, and does it require a plumber?
Most Silverstone installs are completed in a single day by our own trained techs. If a job needs work that requires a licensed plumber—certain permit situations, for example—we bring in the licensed plumber we work with for that portion; otherwise, installation is handled start to finish by our team.
