Acidic water — a pH below the neutral 7.0 — is common in Florida wells, and it quietly eats your plumbing. The telltale signs are blue-green stains where water sits (that’s dissolved copper from your own pipes), a metallic taste, and, over time, pinhole leaks in copper lines and premature failure of fixtures and water heaters. Left alone, corrosive water is one of the most expensive well-water problems because the damage is to the house itself.
A calcite neutralizer solves it simply. Water flows up through a bed of naturally mined calcium-carbonate media; the calcite slowly dissolves just enough to raise the pH into the neutral, non-corrosive range. For very aggressive, very low-pH water we blend in a magnesia media that raises pH further. There are no chemicals to inject — the media does the work, the system backwashes itself to stay clean, and you simply add more calcite periodically as it’s consumed.
Because neutralizing adds a little hardness to the water, homes that already have hard water often pair a neutralizer with a softener installed after it. We test your pH and hardness, size the neutralizer to your flow, and sequence it correctly so your plumbing is protected and your water still feels great.
Why the neutralizer usually goes in first
Low pH does more than stain sinks and pit copper — it quietly cripples iron treatment. Oxidation slows down badly in acidic water, so an iron filter sitting on a low-pH well never performs the way it is rated to, and the filter gets the blame. If your well has both problems, the neutralizer goes ahead of the air-injection filter, not after it. Getting that order wrong is one of the most common reasons a well system underdelivers.
What it costs you downstream, and the maintenance reality
Calcite works by dissolving, which means two things worth knowing up front. First, the media is a consumable — the bed drops as it does its job and needs topping up periodically. That is not a flaw, it is the mechanism. Second, it adds hardness, because what it puts into the water is calcium. On a home that already has hard water, that is why the softener goes in after the neutralizer rather than before it.
Contact time matters here too. The water has to spend long enough in the bed to pick up what it needs, so bed depth and flow rate are part of the sizing — a neutralizer that is too small for the house corrects less than it should at peak demand. For very low pH we use a calcite and magnesia blend, which lifts further than calcite alone.
