What that means for a system in Brandon
Brandon is on Hillsborough’s South-Central system, and here is something we will tell you that most companies would not: your disinfection byproducts are the lowest on our entire service map. TTHM at 17.2 ppb and HAA5 at 12.1 ppb, roughly a third of Bradenton’s. Ozonation plus chloramine does that. So the byproduct argument is weak in Brandon and we are not going to make it.
What is still worth handling is the chloramine at 3.8 ppm and whatever your hardness turns out to be — the county does not publish a hardness figure, so anyone quoting you one is estimating.

How hard is Brandon water?
Hillsborough County does not publish a hardness figure for the South-Central system, so anyone who quotes you one is estimating. We measure it at your tap and size from that.
Does Brandon water have chloramine in it?
Yes. The South-Central system reports chloramine at 3.8 ppm, range 0.03 to 6.8, against a federal maximum of 4.0. Carbon goes ahead of the softener — partly for the chloramine itself, partly because chlorine oxidises softener resin and shortens its life.
Do I need carbon in Brandon if the byproducts are already low?
Yes, but for a different reason than most companies give. Not byproducts — yours are the lowest we see. Carbon goes in because chloramine at 3.8 ppm will shorten the life of the softener resin behind it. The resin manufacturer publishes that roughly every 1 mg/L of chlorine halves resin life. Carbon in front is what makes the softener last the years you paid for.
