How hard is Anna Maria Island water?
Manatee County’s own 2025 report puts total hardness at 279 ppm — 16.3 grains per gallon, with a range of 106 to 279 ppm. That is hard by any standard, and it is roughly double the figure some quotes in this area still use. A unit sized for eight grains on sixteen-grain water regenerates twice as often and wears out early.
Does Anna Maria Island water have chloramine in it?
Yes. Manatee County disinfects with chloramine and reports a residual of 3.3 ppm, range ND to 5.3, against a federal maximum of 4.0 ppm. That matters for two reasons: ordinary carbon largely passes chloramine through, and chlorine in any form oxidises softener resin. So catalytic carbon goes ahead of the softener here, not behind it.
