RO Water Cloudy, Slow, or Tastes Off? Here’s What Each One Means

Your reverse-osmosis system gives you clean, great-tasting water — so when something seems off, it’s easy to worry. Most of the time it’s normal or an easy fix. Here’s how to read each symptom.

Cloudy or milky water

Almost always normal — especially when the system is new, freshly serviced, or has an alkaline filter.

That cloudiness is just tiny air bubbles in the water. It’s very common right after install, and even more so if your system has an alkaline (remineralization) filter that adds healthy minerals back — that stage tends to make the water look milky at first. Pour a glass and let it sit a few seconds; it clears from the bottom up. If it’s still cloudy after several days, let us know.

Slow flow or no water

Two common causes:

  • It just needs time. The storage tank takes about 3 hours to fill from empty, so right after install or a filter change the flow will be light until it catches up.
  • Filters or membrane are due. Flow that’s gotten steadily weaker over months usually means the filters need changing (yearly) or the membrane is due (about every 2 years).

Slow ice or water at the fridge

If you connected your RO to the refrigerator, expect a noticeable pressure drop — and that’s normal. RO water is delivered from a storage tank at lower pressure than your main line, so the ice maker fills slower, cubes can come out smaller, and the door dispenser runs slower than before. It’s the trade-off for RO-quality water and ice, and it’s something we flag before we ever connect it.

Water tastes off

Usually one of two things:

  • You skipped the initial flush. After an install or filter change, fill the tank (~3 hrs), open the faucet and drain it completely, then let it refill. That first flush clears the system and the taste settles in.
  • Filters are due. If taste slips over time, it’s the filters telling you they’re ready for a change.

Gurgling or a trickle to the drain

Normal.

RO systems send a little water to the drain as they work, and you may hear an occasional gurgle. That’s the system doing its job.

How often do the filters and membrane need changing?

The manufacturer rates the pre-, post-, and alkaline filters for roughly every 6–12 months, and the RO membrane for about every 2–5 years — it depends on your water and how much you use. In our local water, our recommendation is simple: filters about once a year, and the membrane about every 2 years. Yours may run longer or shorter, and we’ll tell you when it’s truly due.

Call us if: cloudiness lasts more than a few days, flow is still poor after a fresh filter change, you see any leak, or the taste doesn’t clear after an initial flush.
