Still Have Hard Water After Installing a Water Softener? Here’s Why
You just had a softener installed, but the water still feels hard, or your test says it is. Frustrating — but it’s almost always one of a handful of quick things, and most you can check yourself in a few minutes.
1. You tested the wrong tap (or the hot water)
Test from a cold tap and let it run 15–20 seconds first. Hot water can still read hard for a while (see #7), and outdoor spigots are often plumbed before the softener, so they’re not treated at all.
2. The system is in bypass
If the bypass valve was left in the bypass position, water is flowing around the softener untreated. Make sure it’s set to normal/service.
3. It’s out of salt — or has a “salt bridge”
No salt means no softening. And sometimes salt forms a hard crust with an empty gap underneath, so the tank looks full but isn’t feeding the system. Gently break up any crust with a broom handle and top off the salt.
4. The hardness setting is too low
If the softener is programmed for softer water than you actually have, it runs out of capacity early and hard water slips through. On well water especially, the setting also needs to account for iron. This is a common setup miss.
5. It never regenerated
Softeners clean themselves on a cycle (regeneration). If the clock is set to the wrong time of day, it may be cleaning at the wrong time or skipping — and untreated hard water gets through. Here’s how to check the clock.
6. The resin is fouled (common on well water)
Iron in well water can coat the softening resin over time and choke its capacity, so the system “works” but delivers hard water. A resin cleaner often restores it — this one usually needs a pro to confirm.
7. Your water heater hasn’t turned over yet
Right after install, your cold water is soft immediately, but your water heater still holds about 40 gallons of your old hard water. The hot side feels soft once that tank naturally turns over. Give it a little time.
Checked all of these and it still tests hard? That’s a real one — and exactly what we’re here for.
