Why Isn’t My Whole-House Water “Low TDS” Like My Drinking Water?
You check your whole-house water with a TDS meter, see a number that’s barely changed, and wonder if the system is even working. Good news: it is — and here’s why that reading is exactly what it should be.
A softener removes hardness, not TDS
Your whole-house softener/conditioner is built to remove hardness — the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, spots, and dry skin. It does this by ion exchange: it swaps those hardness minerals for a tiny amount of sodium. Because it’s a swap, the total dissolved solids stay about the same. The water is now soft, not demineralized — and those are two different things.
Carbon removes chlorine, not dissolved minerals
The carbon stage in a whole-house system takes out chlorine, chloramine, and the tastes and odors that come with them. What it doesn’t do is pull out dissolved minerals — so again, the TDS number barely moves.
Low TDS is your reverse osmosis system’s job
Low TDS comes from your reverse-osmosis (RO) drinking-water system, which forces water through a fine membrane that removes dissolved solids at your kitchen tap. That’s why the RO faucet reads low and the rest of the house doesn’t — exactly as designed. One system softens the whole house; the other polishes the water you actually drink.
And you wouldn’t want low TDS everywhere anyway
Running near-zero-TDS water to every tap, your water heater, and your appliances isn’t the goal — soft, filtered water is right for the whole house, and RO water is right for drinking. Each system is doing its job.
