Do Shower Head Filters Work on Florida Water?
Oct 02, 2026The short version: a shower head filter can reduce free chlorine for a while, and that’s about all it’s tested for. The standard for shower filters, NSF/ANSI 177, covers free chlorine only. Manatee County and many Florida utilities disinfect with chloramine, which needs far more contact time than a small cartridge in a hot, fast shower can give. And no shower filter softens water, so the spots and the tight feel from hard water stay. They’re fine for renters and short stays. For a house you own, treating the water where it comes in works at every tap.
What a shower filter is actually tested for
NSF/ANSI 177 is the standard written for shower filtration systems, and it is an aesthetic standard for one thing: reducing free available chlorine. If a shower filter is certified, that’s the claim being certified. Chloramine, hardness, metals and everything else on the box are the manufacturer’s own claims unless they show separate test data.
The chloramine problem
Manatee County’s 2025 report lists chloramine at about 3.3 ppm, and the City of Bradenton lists chlorine and chloramines. Chloramine is chlorine bonded to ammonia so it survives the trip through miles of pipe. That same stability makes it hard to filter.
Breaking chloramine down takes the right media and enough contact time. A shower runs around 2 gallons a minute through a cartridge the size of your fist, with hot water. The water is in contact with the media for a fraction of a second. A whole-home tank holds cubic feet of catalytic carbon and gives the water many times longer.
| Filter media | Free chlorine | Chloramine | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|
| KDF (copper-zinc) | Reduces it | Limited | No |
| Standard carbon | Reduces it, less so in hot water | Barely | No |
| Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) | Neutralizes it | Neutralizes it, but the small cartridge is used up quickly | No |
| Whole-home catalytic carbon | Reduces it | Reduces it, at every tap | No (that’s the softener’s job) |
Shower filters don’t soften water
This is the claim to watch for. Softening means taking calcium and magnesium out, and that takes a resin bed and regeneration with salt. Nothing that screws onto a shower arm can do it. Manatee County water runs up to about 16 grains per gallon, so the film on the glass, the soap that won’t lather and the tight feeling after a shower are mostly hardness. A shower filter leaves all of that in the water.
When a shower filter makes sense
- You rent and can’t install equipment
- You’re in a condo with no place for a system
- Your water uses free chlorine, not chloramine
- You want something for a few months while you decide
If you buy one, look for NSF/ANSI 177 certification, pick vitamin C media if your water has chloramine, and change the cartridge on the schedule the maker gives. An overdue cartridge does nothing.
What works better in a house you own
Treat the water where it enters the house. A softener with catalytic carbon ahead of it reduces the hardness and the chloramine before the water reaches any shower, sink, washer or water heater. On most Manatee County homes that’s one tank in the garage loop, like the Puronics Hydronex iGen C or our value-built Hydrology Essentials. You change nothing at the shower, and there are no cartridges to remember.

Common questions
Do shower head filters really work?
They can reduce free chlorine, which is what the NSF/ANSI 177 standard tests. They do little for chloramine and nothing for hardness.
Do shower filters remove chloramine?
Most do very little. Chloramine needs more contact time than a small cartridge in a fast, hot shower provides. Vitamin C cartridges neutralize it but are used up quickly.
Will a shower filter soften hard water?
No. Softening takes a resin bed that is regenerated with salt. A shower filter leaves the hardness in the water, so spots and soap scum stay.
Does Manatee County water have chlorine or chloramine?
Chloramine, about 3.3 ppm in the county’s 2025 report. The City of Bradenton lists chlorine and chloramines.
How often do shower filter cartridges need changing?
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule. Small cartridges are used up quickly, and an overdue one does nothing.
What is better than a shower filter?
For a home you own, a whole-home softener with catalytic carbon. It reduces hardness and chloramine before the water reaches any shower or tap.
