How to Read Your Water Test Results (Florida Homeowner’s Guide)
Aug 22, 2026When we test your water, you get a set of numbers — hardness, TDS, chlorine or chloramine, pH, iron and more. They’re not complicated once you know what each one means and why it matters for your home. Here’s a plain-English guide to reading your results.
Hardness (grains per gallon)
The big one in Florida. Hardness is the calcium and magnesium dissolved from our limestone aquifers. Roughly: 0–3 gpg is soft, 3–7 moderately hard, 7–10 hard, and 10+ very hard. Most Suncoast homes land in the hard to very-hard range. Higher hardness means more spotting, more scale and faster appliance wear — it’s what a water softener is built to remove.
TDS — Total Dissolved Solids
Everything dissolved in your water added up — minerals, salts, metals. It’s a general “how much stuff is in the water” number, often showing up as a taste or heavier mouthfeel. TDS alone doesn’t tell you what’s dissolved, but a high number is a flag to look closer. Reverse osmosis is what dramatically lowers TDS at your drinking tap.
Chlorine vs. chloramine
Your utility disinfects the water so it stays clean to your tap, and which disinfectant it uses matters a lot. Chlorine is easier to filter with standard carbon. Chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) lasts longer in the pipes and is much harder to remove — a basic carbon filter barely touches it. pH
How acidic or basic the water is (7 is neutral). Low, acidic pH can be corrosive and slowly eat at pipes and fixtures; high pH can worsen scale. Most municipal water is kept near neutral, but wells vary — pH helps us pick the right equipment and materials.
Iron, manganese and the rotten-egg smell
Iron (common on wells and some city areas) causes orange/brown staining and eats into a softener’s capacity — even ~0.3 ppm is enough to stain, and it usually needs dedicated treatment. Manganese behaves like iron’s cousin, causing dark brown/black staining. And if your water smells like rotten eggs — especially on a well — that’s hydrogen sulfide, a treatment issue (usually air injection), not something you can scrub away at the tap.
Putting it together
No single number tells the whole story — it’s the combination that points to the right fix: high hardness → softener; chloramine plus taste/odor → catalytic-carbon filtration; iron/sulfur/manganese (often wells) → dedicated well treatment; want the cleanest drinking water → RO at the kitchen tap.
