What pitcher and fridge filters really do
Almost all pitcher, faucet and refrigerator filters are simple activated-carbon filters. They’re good at improving taste and reducing chlorine and some odors. What they generally don’t do is remove dissolved solids, many heavier contaminants, or the things you can’t taste. They’re a taste upgrade, not a purification system — and the cartridges need frequent replacing to keep working at all.
What reverse osmosis does
Reverse osmosis (RO) pushes water through a membrane with pore openings small enough to reduce a very wide range of dissolved contaminants — not just taste and chlorine, but many of the things a carbon filter leaves behind. That’s why RO is the standard for genuinely clean drinking water. It’s typically installed under the sink (or as a tankless unit like the Micromax 7000) and gives you bottle-quality water straight from a dedicated tap.
So which is worth it?
If all you want is better-tasting water and you’re fine replacing cartridges often, a good carbon filter is inexpensive and fine. If you’re buying bottled water, have young kids, are on a private well, or want to reduce contaminants you can’t taste — like PFAS — RO does far more per dollar over time and ends the bottled-water habit for good.

Is reverse osmosis better than a Brita or fridge filter? For taste alone they’re similar; for reducing dissolved contaminants, RO removes far more than a carbon pitcher or fridge filter can.
Does reverse osmosis waste a lot of water? Older RO units sent several gallons to drain per gallon made; modern and tankless systems are much more efficient.
Do I still need a softener if I have RO? Usually yes — RO treats one drinking tap, while a softener protects your whole home’s plumbing and appliances.
