What Size Water Softener Do You Need? A Florida Sizing Guide
Aug 22, 2026Buy a softener that’s too small and it “runs out,” regenerates constantly, wears out early and leaves you with hard water between cycles. Too big and you’ve overspent. Getting the size right is the single biggest factor in whether a softener actually works for years — and in Florida, with our hard water, it matters even more.
The two numbers that decide your size
First, how hard your water is, measured in grains per gallon (gpg) — Suncoast water is commonly moderately hard to very hard, and this comes straight from a water test. Second, how much water your household uses, driven mostly by how many people live there (a rough rule is ~75 gallons per person per day). Multiply daily use by hardness and you get the grains of hardness a softener has to remove per day.
A simple worked example
A family of four using ~75 gallons each is ~300 gallons a day. At 15 gpg, that’s 300 × 15 = 4,500 grains per day. Over a normal regeneration cycle, that points toward a 48,000-grain system sized to regenerate efficiently — not the small big-box unit that would run out and cycle constantly. Your real numbers may differ; this just shows the math.
Why Florida homes often need more than the box store sells
Our water is hard, so each gallon carries more grains. Iron (common on wells and some city areas) counts extra against a softener’s capacity and fouls resin if ignored — it often needs dedicated treatment ahead of the softener. And bigger households need enough resin and flow so pressure doesn’t drop. That’s why the cheapest, smallest unit so often disappoints.
Don’t forget flow rate
Capacity isn’t the only spec. The softener also has to pass enough flow for your home’s peak demand — two showers plus the dishwasher — without a pressure drop. A properly sized modern system handles this easily; an undersized one becomes a bottleneck.

Common questions
Can I just buy the biggest one to be safe?
Oversizing wastes money and can let resin “channel” (water finds a path and skips some resin), which hurts performance. Right-sized beats oversized.
How often should a softener regenerate?
For a properly sized unit, typically every few days. If yours regenerates daily or you get hard water before it does, it’s likely undersized.
Does iron change the size I need?
Yes. Iron eats into a softener’s capacity and can foul the resin. If your test shows iron (common on wells), we size for it or add dedicated iron treatment ahead of the softener.
What if I’m on a well?
