Fleck vs. Clack Water Softener Valves: Which Is Better?
Two names come up again and again when people compare water softeners: Fleck and Clack. They’re not the softeners themselves — they’re the control valves, the part that runs the whole system. Since the valve is the hardest-working and most failure-prone component, it’s the single biggest factor in how reliable your softener will be over the years. Here’s the comparison, and why the systems we install use Clack.

What the control valve actually does
Every softener has to periodically “regenerate” — flush the hardness minerals off its resin and recharge it with brine. The control valve manages that whole cycle: when it runs, how much water and salt it uses, and how it meters your household demand. A better valve means fewer problems, less wasted salt and water, and a longer service life.
Fleck valves
Fleck (now part of Pentair) has been around for decades and is genuinely time-tested. Parts are widely available and many technicians know them well. The trade-off: several of the most common Fleck models are older, piston-and-seal designs. They work — but they’re the valves you’ll often find on budget and older systems, including some competitors’ equipment in this area.
Clack valves
The Clack WS1 is a newer, U.S.-built valve with a clean single-piston design. Independent installers tend to favor it for a few practical reasons: it runs quietly, it’s straightforward to service, it carries a strong manufacturer warranty, and because it’s non-proprietary, it isn’t locked to one dealer — anyone qualified can service it down the road. In everyday terms: it’s built to keep working with minimal fuss.
Why we favor Clack
We install the equipment we’d put in our own homes. For the softeners we build, the Clack WS1 gives our clients dependable performance and easy long-term serviceability — and the tech who tests your water is the one who installs and stands behind the system. We also offer premium Puronics equipment for whole-home softening and catalytic-carbon filtration. The right choice depends on your water, which is why we start with a free in-home water test.

Is a Clack valve better than a Fleck valve?
Both are proven control valves, but the Clack WS1 is a newer, single-piston design that many independent installers prefer for its reliability, quieter operation, easy serviceability, and strong warranty. Fleck valves are time-tested and widely available, but several common models are older technology. For the systems we install, we favor Clack.
What is a control valve on a water softener?
The control valve is the “brain” of the softener — it manages when the system regenerates and how it draws brine to recharge the resin. It’s the part that does the most work and is the most common point of wear, which is why the valve brand matters for long-term reliability.
Why does Hydrology use Clack-based softeners?
We favor the Clack WS1 for its dependability, straightforward serviceability, and warranty — it’s built to keep working with minimal fuss, and because it’s non-proprietary, it can be serviced easily down the road. We also offer premium Puronics equipment; a free in-home water test helps us match the right system to your water.
Can you service a Fleck valve if I already have one?
Yes — our own technicians service and repair water softeners of any brand, including Fleck-valve systems. If yours is failing, we’ll give you the repair-or-replace tradeoff. Call or text 941-266-8991.
