Tannin Removal Systems
Yellow or tea-colored water that stays discolored after filtration is usually tannins — natural organics from decaying vegetation. A tannin-selective system removes the color and the musty taste that comes with it.

Tannins are natural organic compounds that leach into groundwater from decaying leaves, roots and vegetation — very common in Florida’s coastal and low-lying wells. They’re harmless but cosmetically miserable: water looks like weak tea, tastes musty or earthy, and leaves yellow-brown stains on sinks, tubs and white laundry. Because tannins are dissolved organics, an iron filter or a plain softener won’t remove them — the water stays tinted.
A tannin-removal system uses a special tannin-selective resin that grabs those organic molecules and releases them during regeneration, just like a softener sheds hardness. The result is clear, colorless, better-tasting water throughout the house. Because hard water and tannins so often show up together, we frequently combine tannin resin with softening in a properly sequenced setup so both problems are solved without one interfering with the other.
Tannin levels and water chemistry vary a lot from well to well, so sizing matters — too small and the color breaks through early. We test your water, measure the tannins and hardness, and build the system to match. If you also want spotless drinking water, a reverse-osmosis unit at the kitchen provides a final polish.
Iron has to come out before tannins
Tannin-selective resin is very good at what it does and very easy to ruin. Iron fouls it — it coats the resin and the system loses capacity long before it should, which shows up as colour breaking through earlier and earlier between regenerations. On a well with both iron and tannins, the iron comes out first with air injection or chlorine injection, and the tannin system goes in behind it.
There is a second reason the order matters. Chlorinating water that still carries tannins can create taste and disinfection-byproduct issues, so on a well that needs both, the sequencing and the carbon behind it are not optional details — they are the design.
How you will know it is sized right
Colour breakthrough is the tell. A correctly sized tannin system holds clear right up to regeneration; an undersized one starts showing a tint in the last day or two of the cycle and gets worse over time. Tannin resin also regenerates differently from a softener — it wants more salt and a longer cycle — so a system set up like a plain softener will underperform even when the resin itself is fine.
Tannin levels vary a lot from well to well and even by season, which is why we test rather than estimate. If your water is yellow and a filter has already failed to fix it, that is worth telling us — it usually narrows the diagnosis straight away.
