How Much Does a Clack Water Softener Cost in Florida?
Sep 30, 2026The short version: in our area a professionally installed softener on a metered Clack valve starts around $3,000. Our Hydrology Essentials, a Clack-valve softener with catalytic and activated carbon in one tank, starts at $2,995 installed. A larger whole-home softener with more catalytic carbon for chloramine runs $3,500–$4,500, and adding an under-sink reverse osmosis system puts the package at $3,500–$5,500. Online kits cost less up front, but you take on the plumbing, programming and service yourself.
What you’re paying for
The valve is one line on the bill. A Clack softener quote should include:
- Resin volume and grade. How many cubic feet of resin sets the capacity. Standard resin is 8% crosslink; 10% crosslink is denser and holds up longer against chlorine. Your quote should say which.
- Carbon. On Manatee County water, catalytic carbon matters because standard carbon barely touches chloramine. Ask how much and what kind.
- The valve. A named valve like the Clack WS1 has parts available anywhere. A no-name head may not.
- Brine tank, bypass and drain. Including a proper air gap on the drain line.
- Installation and programming. Plumbing into your loop, setting hardness and capacity to your measured water, a test regeneration, and hauling away the old unit.
What pushes the price up or down
- Your hardness. Manatee County’s 2025 report lists 106–279 mg/L, about 6–16 grains per gallon. Harder water and bigger households need more resin.
- Chloramine. County and many city supplies use it. More catalytic carbon means more cost, and it protects the resin.
- Well water. Iron, sulfur or tannins add equipment ahead of the softener.
- The install site. A builder loop in the garage is quick. Outdoor installs need a valve cover; re-plumbing an older house takes longer.
- HOA rules. Some communities want an approval packet before equipment goes outside. We include it with the quote.

Running costs after install
Salt is the main ongoing cost, roughly $100–$150 a year for a typical home. A metered Clack valve helps here because it only regenerates when the resin is actually used up. Electricity is minimal. Carbon eventually needs replacing on a schedule that depends on how much chloramine it sees. If you’d rather not think about any of it, Platinum Care, our yearly plan, includes salt delivery and maintenance.
How to compare two quotes
Ask each company the same five questions: What grain capacity did you size it to, and from what hardness number? How many cubic feet of resin, and is it 8% or 10% crosslink? What carbon is in it, and how much? What valve is on it? Who services it, and what does the warranty cover? A low price with vague answers usually means a smaller tank, standard carbon, or a valve nobody else can service. Our buyer’s checklist goes deeper.

Common questions
How much does a Clack water softener cost installed?
In Manatee and Sarasota counties, a professionally installed Clack-valve softener typically starts around $3,000. Our Hydrology Essentials starts at $2,995 installed; larger systems with more catalytic carbon run $3,500–$4,500.
Is a Clack softener worth more than a cheaper unit?
Usually, if it’s sized right. A metered Clack valve uses less salt and can be rebuilt with standard parts, so it tends to cost less over the life of the system than a budget valve that has to be replaced.
How much salt does a Clack softener use?
It depends on hardness and household size. Most homes spend roughly $100–$150 a year on salt, and a metered valve keeps that lower by regenerating only when needed.
Can I install a Clack softener myself?
You can buy kits online and install them if you’re handy, but you take on the plumbing, drain air gap, programming and any permit. Mistakes in sizing or programming are the most common reason DIY softeners waste salt.
Do you offer financing on a softener?
Yes. We offer 0% and low monthly options through Synchrony and Wisetack, with a quick pre-approval that doesn’t affect your credit.
Why do softener quotes vary so much?
Resin volume, resin grade, the type and amount of carbon, the valve, and what’s included in installation all change the price. Ask every company the same questions so you compare the same system.
