This North Port home is on a private well, and the water was working against it three ways: salt from saltwater intrusion, sulfur, and bacteria. The TDS meter read 902 ppm, close to double the EPA’s 500 mg/L taste guideline, and the dark growth in the toilet tank came from the same well.
That’s the case where a high TDS number does matter. A softener trades hardness for sodium and leaves the salt in. Carbon handles the sulfur smell, not the salt. Reverse osmosis is the one treatment that takes dissolved salt out, so we quoted a whole-home reverse osmosis system. On a well like this, the bacteria and sulfur also have to be handled ahead of the membranes, which is why it’s a system we build from a test, not off a price sheet.
