Is Lakewood Ranch Water Hard? The Real Numbers and What Fixes It

Aug 14, 2026

Yes. Almost every Lakewood Ranch home is on Manatee County water, and the county’s own 2025 report puts hardness between 106 and 279 mg/L — about 6 to 16 grains per gallon. That runs from moderately hard to very hard, depending on the day. It’s also treated with chloramine, which matters for how you fix it.

How hard is that, really?

Water hardness is usually graded on the U.S. Geological Survey’s scale. Lakewood Ranch water lands in the top half of it.

Soft0–60 mg/L
Moderately hard61–120 mg/L
Hard121–180 mg/L
Very hardover 180 mg/L

Highlighted: where Manatee County’s 106–279 mg/L range falls. To convert to grains per gallon, divide by 17.1.

Why the number moves around

Manatee County doesn’t send out water from one source. It blends treated surface water from the Lake Manatee Reservoir with treated groundwater from the Floridan aquifer, and the mix changes through the year. That’s why the report gives a range instead of one number — and why the hardness at your tap in March may not match what it is in August.

It’s also why we size softeners to a test at your faucet, not to a county average.

Is all of Lakewood Ranch on county water?

Nearly all of it. Lakewood Ranch’s existing neighborhoods — Star Farms, Cresswind, Del Webb, Country Club East, The Isles, Esplanade, Summerfield, Sweetwater and the rest — are in Manatee County. The exception is the newer Waterside village on the Sarasota County side. If you’re in Waterside, check your water bill for which utility serves you; either way, the free test tells us what’s actually in your water.

What hard water does in a Lakewood Ranch house

Glass and fixtures

White spots on shower doors and faucets that come back days after you clean them.

Water heaters

Scale settles in the tank or the heat exchanger and cuts efficiency. Tankless heaters are especially sensitive to it.

Soap and laundry

Soap doesn’t lather well, so you use more of it, and towels come out stiff.

Skin and hair

What actually fixes it

A water softener. It trades the calcium and magnesium for sodium on a bed of resin beads, so the scale stops forming. On Lakewood Ranch water we put carbon in front of the softener, because the county disinfects with chloramine — 3.3 ppm on average in the 2025 report — and chlorine in any form wears out softener resin over time.

Two things that don’t fix it: a salt-free conditioner, which changes how hardness behaves but leaves it in the water, and a refrigerator or pitcher filter, which isn’t built for hardness at all.

Sizing matters more than brand: a softener is sized to your hardness in grains and how much water the house uses. Too small and it regenerates constantly; too big and the resin can channel. That’s the point of testing first.

Who installs softeners in Lakewood Ranch

Hydrology Water Solutions is based next door in Bradenton and has installed more than 90 water treatment systems in Lakewood Ranch, including in Del Webb, Esplanade at Azario, Sweetwater, Savanna, Star Farms, Country Club East and Summerfield. The same local tech who tests your water does the install, usually on the water loop already in your garage, which keeps the HOA happy. Common questions

How many grains of hardness is Lakewood Ranch water?

About 6 to 16 grains per gallon, from Manatee County’s 2025 range of 106–279 mg/L. Your tap can sit anywhere in that range depending on the blend.

What else is in Lakewood Ranch water besides hardness?

Chloramine, the county’s disinfectant, at 3.3 ppm on average in the 2025 report. The county’s 2024 testing found none of 29 PFAS compounds. People add reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink for taste and to reduce specific contaminants like lead or PFAS.

Does my HOA need to approve a softener?

In many deed-restricted Lakewood Ranch communities, yes. The association usually wants to see the installer’s license and insurance. We put that packet together with the quote.

Will a softener make my water salty?

It adds a small amount of sodium — roughly 7.5 mg per quart for each grain removed. A reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink takes most of it back out of your drinking water.
