Why St. Petersburg homes need a water softener

St. Petersburg runs on hard, treated water from the regional Tampa Bay Water supply. That hardness spots your glasses, scales your water heater, films your skin and quietly shortens the life of every water-using appliance. A properly sized softener reduces it at the source, for the whole house.

Not our numbers — your utility’s own. Every figure below is reported with the legal limit beside it, and where City of St. Petersburg does not publish something, we say so instead of filling in a guess.

What that means for a system in St. Petersburg

St Pete water runs about 9.2 grains of hardness with chloramine at 3.73 ppm. Both get handled, and the chloramine is the reason carbon goes in front of the softener rather than behind it — it protects the resin as well as the taste.

Radium sits at 2.1 pCi/L, well under the 5 pCi/L limit but high relative to our other cities. Radium reduction is an elective certified claim under NSF/ANSI 44, which means a softener can be certified to reduce it and most on the market are not. If that matters to you, ask for the certification rather than the brochure.

One change worth knowing: the city stopped adding fluoride on 16 June 2025. What remains is naturally occurring.

Installing in St. Petersburg

St Pete’s older housing stock is the local factor. The 1920s bungalows and the mid-century neighbourhoods sometimes still have galvanised runs, and a softener will not fix a pipe that is already restricted. We look at what you actually have before we quote a system size.

We install and service throughout Historic Kenwood, Old Northeast, Crescent Lake, Snell Isle and the Skyway Marina district. The water test is free and there is no obligation attached to it — it is simply the only honest way to size a system.

How our install works

Every install starts with a free in-home water test, so your system is sized to your actual water β€” never a one-size-fits-all box. Your own local Hydrology tech tests, recommends and installs it, start to finish, with clean, careful plumbing. If a job needs a permit, we bring in the licensed plumber we work with.

Local, start to finish

St Pete’s older housing is the thing we check first — a softener will not fix a restricted galvanised line, and we would rather tell you that than sell around it. Puronics systems come third-party certified as finished units with a manufacturer warranty; our own value-built option is there when the badge is not what you are buying.

Common questions

What people here
ask us first.

Straight answers about the water at your address.

How hard is St. Petersburg water?

The city’s own 2025 report puts hardness at 158 ppm — about 9.2 grains per gallon. Enough to scale a water heater and spot glassware, and a straightforward sizing job once we confirm it at your tap.

Does St. Petersburg water have chloramine in it?

Yes. The city states that all of its potable water is disinfected using chloramines, at 3.73 ppm with a range of 0.60 to 5.60. Carbon goes in front of the softener for it — and because chlorine oxidises resin, which is the part nobody mentions.

Did St Petersburg stop fluoridating the water?

Yes. The city discontinued adding fluoride on 16 June 2025 to comply with Florida law. What remains in the water is naturally occurring. It is not something a softener addresses either way, and we mention it only because people ask.

Salt-free or salt-based β€” which should I get?

Salt-based systems truly soften; salt-free systems condition. We walk you through which fits after testing.

How long does a softener install take?

Most installs are done in a few hours by your own local tech, with clean plumbing.
