Sun City Center water softeners
Water softeners in Sun City Center,
installed by our own techs.
We have installed more than 15 systems in Sun City Center. The same local tech who tests your water installs the softener. No subcontractors.
Why Sun City Center homes need a water softener
Sun City Center runs on hard city water, popular with 55+ residents. That hardness spots your glasses, scales your water heater, films your skin and quietly shortens the life of every water-using appliance. A properly sized softener reduces it at the source, for the whole house.
What is actually in Sun City Center’s water
Not our numbers — your utility’s own. Every figure below is reported with the legal limit beside it, and where Hillsborough County, South-Central system does not publish something, we say so instead of filling in a guess.
| What | Published figure | Against the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Total hardness | Not published | the county does not report it. The closest published figure is Pinellas County’s, on the same Tampa Bay Water regional supply: 189–244 mg/L, about 11–14 grains per gallon — hard to very hard. It isn’t the county’s own number, which is why we test at your tap before we size anything. |
| Chloramine residual | 3.8 ppm | federal max 4.0 ppm |
| TTHM | 17.2 ppb | MCL 80 ppb — lowest on our map |
| HAA5 | 12.1 ppb | MCL 60 ppb — lowest on our map |
| E. coli, August 2025 | 2 positives of 2,500+ samples | an MCL violation, corrected. You should hear it from us. |

What that means for a system in Sun City Center
Sun City Center is on Hillsborough’s South-Central supply — chloramine at 3.8 ppm, and the lowest disinfection byproducts on our map. The county does not publish a hardness figure, so we measure it rather than quote one.
The local factor here is not the water, it is the household. A lot of homes in the community are one or two people, and some sit empty for months. That makes a metered valve worth real money: it regenerates on water actually used rather than on a timer that runs whether anyone is home or not. On a seasonal home a timer can burn a season’s salt for nobody.
Installing in Sun City Center
Sun City Center installs are usually straightforward — slab homes, accessible garages, and often a previous system to remove. We will tell you whether an existing unit is worth keeping and re-bedding rather than replacing, because sometimes it is.
We install and service throughout Sun City Center, Kings Point, Cypress Mill and Freedom Plaza. The water test is free and there is no obligation attached to it — it is how we size a system.

How our install works
Every install starts with a free in-home water test, so your system is sized to your actual water — never a one-size-fits-all box. Your own local Hydrology tech tests, recommends and installs it, start to finish, with clean, careful plumbing. If a job needs a permit, we bring in the licensed plumber we work with.
We’re already in Sun City Center
A lot of our Sun City Center work is replacing or re-bedding equipment somebody else installed, and we will tell you when the existing unit is worth keeping. Puronics systems come certified as finished units with a manufacturer warranty; our own value-built option is priced for people who want it solved properly without the premium.

What hard water does to a home: the Battelle study →
How hard is Sun City Center water?
Hillsborough County does not publish a hardness figure for the South-Central system, so anyone who quotes you one is estimating. We measure it at your tap and size from that.
Does Sun City Center water have chloramine in it?
Yes. The South-Central system reports chloramine at 3.8 ppm, range 0.03 to 6.8, against a federal maximum of 4.0. Carbon goes ahead of the softener — partly for the chloramine itself, partly because chlorine oxidises softener resin and shortens its life.
Is it worth replacing the system the previous owner left?
Sometimes, and sometimes not — and we will tell you which. Plenty of the equipment we find in Sun City Center is structurally fine and simply needs re-bedding rather than replacing, which is a fraction of the cost. What usually does need changing is a timer valve on a home that sits empty half the year, because it regenerates whether anyone is there or not.
Salt-free or salt-based — which should I get?
Salt-based systems truly soften; salt-free systems condition. We walk you through which fits your water after testing.
How long does a softener install take?
Most installs are done in a few hours by your own local tech, with clean plumbing.
