How Long Does a Water Softener Last in Florida?
Oct 23, 2026The short version: a well-kept softener usually lasts 10 to 15 years or more. The tank rarely fails. What wears out is the resin inside it and the seals and piston in the control valve. On chloramine-treated city water, a carbon filter in front of the softener protects the resin and adds years. Many “dead” softeners just need a valve rebuild or new resin, not a new system.
What wears out, and how fast
Signs your softener is wearing out
- Spots and scale are back even though there’s salt in the tank.
- The salt level never drops, so it isn’t drawing brine.
- Tiny tan or amber beads in faucet aerators or the toilet tank. That’s resin escaping.
- Lower water pressure through the house, which can mean resin that’s turned to mush.
- It runs or drains at odd times, or the display shows an error.
- A leak at the valve or from the tank.
Before assuming the worst, run a hardness test strip at the kitchen tap. Our guide to still having hard water after a softener walks through the simple causes first: salt bridges, a bypass valve left open, or the wrong settings.
Repair or replace?
We usually repair when:
- the valve is a common, rebuildable type (see Clack vs Fleck) and only the seals or piston are worn
- the resin is tired but the tank and valve are sound. New resin is a fraction of the cost of a new system
- the problem is a board or motor that’s easy to get
We usually recommend replacing when the system is past about 12 to 15 years and has more than one problem, when the valve is proprietary and parts are gone, or when the softener was never sized right for the household in the first place.
How to make one last
- Keep salt in it. At least a quarter full, and break up salt bridges.
- Filter chloramine first. On Manatee County and most local city water, a catalytic carbon filter ahead of the softener takes the disinfectant out before it reaches the resin.
- Treat iron first on a well. Iron coats resin. An iron filter in front protects it.
- Get it checked once a year. Settings, brine draw and hardness at the tap. That’s part of our service plans.
- Protect it from surges and floods during hurricane season.
Common questions
How long does a water softener last?
Usually 10 to 15 years or more with basic care. The resin and the control valve’s seals are what wear out, and both can often be replaced without replacing the whole system.
How do I know if my water softener resin is bad?
Hard water coming through with salt in the tank, resin beads in the aerators or toilet tank, and a drop in water pressure are common signs. A hardness test at the tap confirms whether it’s still softening.
Does chloramine damage water softener resin?
Chlorine and chloramine slowly break down softener resin over years. A carbon filter ahead of the softener reduces the disinfectant before it reaches the resin.
Is it worth repairing an old water softener?
Often, yes, if the valve is a common rebuildable type and the tank is sound. If it’s past 12 to 15 years with several problems or parts are unavailable, replacing usually makes more sense.
