Better Water When You Rent: What Renters in Bradenton Can Do

Oct 13, 2026

The short version: without the owner’s permission you’re limited to things that don’t touch the plumbing: a certified pitcher or countertop filter for drinking water, a vitamin C shower filter for the chloramine smell, and a few cleaning habits for hard-water spots. With a written OK from your landlord, an under-sink reverse osmosis system is small and easy to add, and a softener is simple to add in newer homes that have a plumbing loop. It also protects the owner’s water heater and fixtures, and that’s the part to lead with when you ask.

What you can do without asking anyone

Drinking water

A pitcher or faucet-mount filter certified to NSF/ANSI 42 reduces chlorine taste and odor. Look for NSF/ANSI 53 if you want reduction claims for things like lead. Most pitchers are slow on chloramine, which is what Manatee County uses, so if the water still tastes like a pool, that’s why. A countertop reverse osmosis unit sits next to the sink, needs no installation, and gives you much more thorough drinking water treatment. Change the cartridges on schedule. An old filter does very little.

The shower

Most shower filters use carbon or KDF media, which barely touch chloramine at shower flow rates. Filters that use vitamin C neutralize both chlorine and chloramine, so they’re the type to look for here. No shower filter softens water, so it won’t fix spots or scale.

Hard water spots

  • Use a rinse aid in the dishwasher.
  • Squeegee the shower glass after each use.
  • Soak faucet aerators and showerheads in white vinegar every month or two.
  • Wipe fixtures dry. Spots are what’s left when hard water evaporates.

What you can do with your landlord’s OK

Get permission in writing before anything gets plumbed in. Your lease probably already says so.

  • Under-sink reverse osmosis. It fits in the kitchen cabinet with a small faucet on the sink. It can be removed when you move out, or left behind as an upgrade.
  • A water softener. Many homes built in the last twenty years around Lakewood Ranch, Parrish and Bradenton have a softener loop already plumbed, so installing one is quick.
  • Whole-home filtration for chloramine taste and smell at every tap.

How to ask your landlord

Lead with what the owner gets. Hard water scales up water heaters, faucets and appliances, and those are the owner’s costs. Independent testing by Battelle for the Water Quality Research Foundation found that softened water helped water heaters keep their efficiency. See what the study found. A short note works:

“The water here is hard and it’s leaving scale on the fixtures. Would you be open to a softener, or an under-sink drinking water system at my cost? A local water treatment company would install it, and it protects the water heater and plumbing.”

If the owner or property manager has questions, we’re happy to talk to them directly.

Common questions

Can a renter install a water softener?

Only with the property owner’s permission, preferably in writing, because it connects to the home’s plumbing. Many owners agree because softened water protects the water heater and fixtures.

What is the best water filter for renters?

For drinking water, a certified pitcher, faucet-mount or countertop reverse osmosis unit needs no installation. For the shower, a vitamin C filter is the type that neutralizes chloramine.

Do shower filters soften water?

No. Shower filters can reduce chlorine or chloramine smell, but they don’t remove hardness, so they won’t stop spots or scale.

Can an under-sink RO system be removed when I move?

Yes. An under-sink RO system connects to the cold water line and the drain under the sink and can be taken out, leaving the plumbing as it was.
