How to Choose a Water Treatment Company in Manatee & Sarasota

Oct 09, 2026

The short version: pick the company that tests your water first, puts the brand, model and size in writing, shows you the certification and the warranty terms, and will still be around to service it. Compare quotes on those four things, not just the total. A fair price is still fair tomorrow, so you never need to decide the same day.

1. Did they test your water?

Every recommendation should start with a test of your water at your house. Hardness, chloramine, iron and pH decide what size and type of system you need. A quote without a test is a guess. See what happens at a free in-home test.

2. Is the equipment certified, and can you check it?

Certification means an independent lab tested the system against a standard, like NSF/ANSI 44 for softeners or NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis. You don’t have to take anyone’s word for it. The Water Quality Association keeps a public list of certified products. Look up the exact model on your quote. If it isn’t listed, ask why.

3. Is the quote specific?

A good quote names:

  • the brand and model of every piece of equipment
  • the size: grain capacity for a softener, cubic feet of media for a filter
  • the control valve (Clack and Fleck are common, and here’s the difference)
  • what’s included in the install: bypass, drain line, loop connection, permits if needed
  • the total price

If two quotes don’t list those things, you can’t compare them.

4. What does the warranty actually cover?

“Lifetime warranty” can mean very different things. Ask for the terms in writing and check:

  • Which parts are covered: tanks, valve, electronics, media.
  • For how long, and whether labor is included.
  • Who honors it: the manufacturer, or only the dealer who sold it.
  • What you have to do to keep it: registration, yearly service, salt type.

Ours is laid out on the Puronics warranty page.

5. Who services it in five years?

A softener should run ten years or more. Ask who comes out when something goes wrong, whether they use their own techs, and whether parts for the valve are easy to get. Equipment built on a common, rebuildable valve can be serviced by almost anyone. A proprietary valve can only be fixed by the company that sold it.

6. Can you read their reviews?

Read the reviews yourself on Google, including the lower ones and how the company answered them. How a company handles a problem tells you more than a wall of five-star reviews. Here are ours.

7. Do you feel rushed?

You should get the numbers, the recommendation and the price, and then time to think. Ask for proof of insurance, and don’t let anyone hurry you into signing. If a price is only good today, ask why.

A note on comparing prices

Once your quotes list the same things, comparing is easy. If another company quotes the same product, the same warranty and the same certification for less, we’ll match it. The details are on our specials page.

Common questions

What should a water softener quote include?

The brand and model, the grain capacity, the control valve, what the installation includes, the warranty terms and the total price. Without those, two quotes can’t be compared fairly.

How do I check if a water softener is certified?

Look up the exact model on the Water Quality Association’s public list of certified products at find.wqa.org. Softeners are usually certified to NSF/ANSI 44 and RO systems to NSF/ANSI 58.

Should I get more than one quote?

Yes, if you want to. Make sure each quote is based on a test of your water and lists the same details, so you’re comparing like for like.

Do you match other companies’ prices?

Yes, when the other quote is a published price for the same product, with the same warranty and the same certification. Text us a photo of the quote before you sign.
