Softening and filtration — you often want both
A softener removes hardness; filtration removes the chlorine and chloramine taste and smell. Most Sarasota homes benefit from both, and we size them together after a free test.
What to ask any filtration company in Sarasota
Start with your own water. City of Sarasota supplies Sarasota, disinfecting with free chlorine — no chloramine, at softened at the plant, so we measure at your tap. Because it is free chlorine rather than chloramine, a plain GAC filter does the job here and catalytic carbon earns nothing.
Then ask every company quoting you the same four questions. What media is in the tank and how many cubic feet of it? What grain hardness did you size to, and where did that figure come from? What brand of valve is it, and can anyone get parts? Who backs the warranty, in writing, with a company name on it rather than “coverage determined by your local dealer”?
Those four separate the companies that know your water from the ones selling a box. Ask us too — and check the answers at the Water Quality Association’s product listing, which is public and free.
Locally: downtown and the older neighborhoods often mean a tight side-yard or a utility closet rather than a garage, and we check the main size on the pre-war homes before quoting.
Figures are from City of Sarasota’s own published water quality report. Where a utility does not publish something, we say so rather than estimate it. The water test is free and carries no obligation.

Why catalytic carbon matters here
Sarasota County disinfects with chloramine, and standard carbon barely touches chloramine — catalytic carbon is what actually removes it. The City of Sarasota uses free chlorine. We match the filtration to your address.

“I cannot say enough amazing things about this company and system! We had three companies come out and Hydrology stood out on every level.”
“We’ve had our system now a month and absolutely love it. My wife is a hair beautician with over 30 years of experience and definitely can tell the difference with the water.”
“Wow, I can definitely feel a difference in my hair, skin, and when I wash my hands. I knew getting a water softener was a priority and I’m so glad I decided to go with Hydrology.”

What hard water does to a home: the Battelle study →
What does a whole-home filter remove? +
Chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor at every tap. Paired with a softener it also handles hardness. For PFAS at the drinking tap, add reverse osmosis.
Catalytic carbon vs standard carbon — what’s the difference? +
Standard carbon handles chlorine but barely touches chloramine. Catalytic carbon is built to break chloramine down — which matters because Sarasota County chloraminates.
Do I need a softener and a filter? +
Often yes — they do different jobs. A softener handles hardness; filtration handles chlorine/chloramine and taste. We size them together to your water.
Does filtration remove PFAS? +
A whole-home carbon filter isn’t the PFAS answer — reverse osmosis is, at your drinking tap. Sarasota County’s PFOA measured 3.8 ppt (just under the 4.0 limit).
How much does whole-home filtration cost? +
It depends on your water and home. We test first, quote transparently, and offer financing with low monthly options.
More than a softener — whole-home filtration tackles chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor at every tap. We’re a local, WQA-certified team that tests first and fits the right filtration to your water.
