Lorraine Lakes is Lennar’s Lakewood Ranch community of about 1,500 homes, many of them built in the last few years. Newer houses here usually have space in the garage for a softener, and the kitchen cabinet decides which reverse osmosis system fits.
The water is Manatee County’s: 6 to 16 grains hard, disinfected with chloramine. Spotted shower glass and a chlorine-like smell in hot water are the usual complaints on this water, and a softener with carbon in front of it takes care of both for the whole house.
